The Pride of Iowa Chorus is committed to promoting a cappella four part singing to men of all ages, but especially to young people. We sing barbershop, show tunes, gospel, pop, classical and jazz in a diverse repertoire. Singing is a lifelong intergenerational activity that brings men and women from diverse communities together in harmony.
The Barbershop Harmony Society is a huge supporter of vocal music education. The Pride of Iowa is committed to forming strong partnerships with local school groups, music educators, and their organizations. Our Youth in Harmony workshops, camps, and school visits provide students opportunities to develop healthy singing techniques and a unique repertoire of songs as we share the value of singing in the barbershop style.
Each year we provide young men and women free instruction and materials. We provide quality role models for young men to follow in their lives. The Harmony Explosion program, now in its sixth year, includes coaching by guest directors and quartets. Pride of Iowa Harmony Night events are scheduled at schools during the school year. The Youth in Harmony program includes providing sheet music to schools in conjunction with these events. Members of the Pride of Iowa Chorus act as mentors to the young singers at the workshops. Pride of Iowa quartets are available to coach quartets at participating schools.
Over six years of youth in harmony workshops (some in partnership with Harmony Central Sweet Adelines Chapter) the Pride of Iowa has served over 750 young singers from more than 15 area schools. The Youth in Harmony program focuses on 8th and 9th grade singers augmented by upper class participation. We teach and demonstrate vocal production and performance skills that apply to all genres.
Over two days in October 2014, the 2012 Barbershop Harmony Society international champion quartet Ringmasters coached singers at two local high schools. This Barbershop Festival concluded with a free concert featuring the 160 boys, the Ringmasters and the Pride of Iowa.
The Pride of Iowa invites school vocal music directors to participate in an advisory committee to provide a link to other directors and choral music associations. Scholarships are available for attendance at the Barbershop Harmony Society Harmony University, a comprehensive week long continuing education program at Belmont College in Nashville.
Throughout each year, the Pride of Iowa conducts Harmony Nights at the request of local high school music directors. Students are invited to bring their fathers and spend an evening learning to sing and perform a couple of barbershop classics.
